Spectacular, dazzling, and evocative. Devonport’s new sound and light show – From Sky to Sea – illuminates the coastal city with the palawa story of creation of the Central North Coast region of Tasmania; reaching deep across the landscape to the mountains and the journey of the Mersey River spilling from deep within the central wilderness of the island, gushing down across the coastal, agricultural landscape to this city. A city that has been re-imagined and re-born on the center of the Northern Coastline of Tasmania; welcoming arriving and departing travellers on their voyage aboard the Spirit of Tasmania vessels that pass in and out of the mouth of the Mersey River where the patterned, illuminated hexagonal pillars are dancing in curated light and throw their beams in a magnificent light show.

Conceptual layers from local artists fuse together elements layered into this exciting light show, inspired from the natural landscape; from the unique columnar jointing of basalt rock at Don Heads inspiring the extruded forms of the lighted pillars, to snow gum trees and the topographic lines that lace the coastal terrain. This has been layered through ‘gobo’ patterns, laser and LED colours projected across the park, with the story of creation, narrated by Dave Gough, in fusion with the music of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and a local band known as Sumner.

Truely spectacular, and an experience that comes to life each evening, 365 days of the year; placed in the city’s new Waterfront Park in the CBD heart, balancing on the edge of the Mersey River. Central to the display is the rotunda; marking the original train turntable that once sat here. Close by, the Waterfront Park is edged by groovy cafes and restaurants and the architectural elevated walkway; lifting visitors up to farewell and welcome the passing Spirit of Tasmania ferries and onboard travellers.
Show times:
8:30pm, 9pm, 9:30pm and 10pm (every night, 365 days per year)
Location:
15 minutes' drive from Compass Hut at the Devonport Waterfront Park
